Just some farmers opinion, not based on any calculation of potential loss.
""Here's this harm we're inflicting on ourselves. I feel like I should be able to do something about it. And I can't," said Hurst, who is also the president of the Missouri Farm Bureau. "
A Missouri corn farmer is worried about NAFTA and what could happen to his farm, his family and his community if the U.S. pulls out of the trade agreement, as President Donald Trump has threatened to do.
Would you like some lotion for that burn? It's still tariff free afaik.
Probably individual Americans will feel the hurt more by the import tariffs that increase the price of imports, than by the retaliatory tarriffs. We run a massive trade deficit after all, and have a glorious history of agricultural subsidies and paying farmers to not grow stuff. So the losses in exports will be socialized, spread around enough to dilute and obscure the effect.
If the USD ends up being dropped as world reserve currency then the trade deficit would hurt a lot more.
Maybe they aren't even able to sell their whole produce, possibly forcing them to use it as expensive animal feed or let it rot in the Silos
(especially theUS corn farmers come to my mind, which predominately seem to produce for export to mexico ... and may be doomed if mexico enacts punitive tariffs on corn (and mexican food producers get their corn from southern america instead of the USA))
No. They will sell everything. It's a world market.
The farmers in the affected states will have fewer people buying their crops forcing them to sell at lower prices, slashing their income.

If there's a political rationale for the Trump administration imposing steel and aluminum tariffs on U.S. allies such as Canada, many economists believe it's about playing to the farm vote and manufacturing sector. The danger in this, analysts warn, is that an escalating trade war will hurt the farm belt.
