During World War 2 american convoys often trundled along the Stuart Highway passing through a little town in the Northern Territory called Tennant Creek.
There was, according to local legend, a man who would go up to the american army trucks just as they were leaving town. He would offer bottles of rum for sale at a good price. Of course he approached then just as they were leaving town.
A little further down the road a thirsty american would open his bottle to enjoy a draught of rum.
The bottles actually contained tea.
That stopped when one of those americans passed through the town again. He had a gun and was looking this "rum merchant". He didn't find him though.Comment
