  • I heard the other day that soccer in the US is going to face the same scrutiny. And that it would make us noncompetitive in the future in World play because no other nation would stop their kids from playing it.

    • Player-to-player contact caused the majority of concussions. Headers were the most dangerous individual soccer-specifc move.

Health researchers and soccer moms have known for years that more concussions occur in high school soccer than in any other sport except for football. Now, a new study in the journal JAMA Pediatrics details exactly how soccer players are getting those head injuries. Player-to-player contact caused the majority of concussions. But headers, which require players to redirect the ball with their head, were the most dangerous individual move, responsible for nearly a third of concussions for boys and more than a quarter for girls.
If we regulate headers out of the game, that will lead to the competitive issue I listed above.

      • I wonder if the stats would show you are more likely to get a concussion injury from a traffic collision on the way to or from soccer practice than from soccer practice itself. Would show the absurdity of the logic.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

        • I don't know. Everything concussion is a hot topic in the US in terms of High School sports. Just last weekend I saw and article on concussions in wrestling.
Parents are too protective in the US these days of physical damage and hurt feelings. Don't get me started on participation trophies.

You are ignoring the labor participation rate and how people drop out of the unemployment figures.

The U.S. Soccer Federation has issued new guidelines banning children 10 and under from heading the ball in practice or games.

So what? Given that you didn't disagree with anything, that means that you agree that Western Europeans were Nazi who thought that killing and enslaving non-Western Europeans is completely normal and it's actually their god-given right to bring "culture" to "natives" and "barbarians". German Nazi used exactly the same reasons when they killed others. Well, at least when they killed and planned to enslave Russians, i think they used different reasoning for Jews.

But wait, you do exactly the same things now.

The general explanation given is that our Muslims come from a much wider set of countries instead of just one, so they don't form ghettos so readily. Also America has a peculiar gift for assimilating foreigners, or so I'm told. And I get the feeling our Muslims are a smaller chunk of the population; we don't do official counts by religion, but last I heard there were maybe three million according to best guess. Less than one percent of the country. We have substantially more Jews than Muslims.
The real explanation is that USA doesn't allow immigration of a random people in. And it doesn't pay free money to the ones that came in. That's exactly what Germany should do, and then they also won't have problems with migrants.

But, harmless and tolerated as assimilated Muslims are, any large influx of foreign Muslims would be widely seen as doing the work of ISIS.
Again, the problem is with migrants who don't work. If they actually work, and they have a family to feed and care for, they have no time for bull**** like ISIS or something. If 70% of the recent migrants into Germany are 18-35 year old males, and many of them don't work, they have all free time in the world, no responsibility, and no money. That's like a perfect recruits for ISIS, even if majority of them weren't when they immigrated in EU.
So, the solution is to let only full families with children in, and invite only as many as there are jobs for them. That's the best way to do it if a security is the biggest concern.

By the way, talking about totalitarian society. I heard recently a USA policemen killed a 12 year old girl. That would have been a USSR-wide scandal with the Kremlin involved if it would have happened in USSR.

But in USA policemen kill more than a thousand per year, even kids, and noone cares. Police state, fact.

I'm surprised its still a big problem with balls getting a lot lighter over the last couple of decades. Heading does sometimes hurt like a mother****er though. If the evidence shows it to be damaging long term though, I'd expect the European countries to be on that faster than the US, as worker and child protection rights tend to be much stronger over here.

To be honest though, even if headers were removed from the game (crazy as that sounds) it wouldn't completely **** the sport, although it would certainly make defending more interesting and probably lead to a lot more goals.

                          • Odd little drift this conversation has taken. I have doubts as to the relevance of sports to violence. While I think they're rather daft, I don't think they present any meaningful stimulus to violence, and as a sub I've seen their surprising usefulness. They give teachers a means to reach students who are otherwise profoundly unmotivated to give a damn about any part of academics. It's not unusual for the coach of the football or basketball teams to be the teacher of the remedial reading or math skills classes. In part this is because "Coach" is usually pretty tough to intimidate, in part because he has the power to say, "look, if you don't start trying harder, I'm going to have to bench you." Some kids will listen to that even as they laugh off prospects of higher income, respectability, parental approval, and most every other "hook" you can name. It's not much, but it's something.

I've heard about the alarming incidence of brain damage. I'm not sure if even that will make the easy headway against football culture that you imagine. Plenty of people will put their kids in danger (all types of danger) out of love for traditional norms, in our culture as in any other.
