Deaf kids are being taught today that they should be empowered by having a language of their own. And that society should accommodate them with their needs. The problem is that this isn't working. They aren't getting the education that they need to succeed.

Yes, I've wondered about this. Teaching deaf kids to be proud of their deafness, and not get intervention to improve their hearing where it's doable is another aspect. I don't have a strong opinion either way, but it's an interesting development, and I suspect a counter-productive one.

It's not an easy decision. The best present intervention (cochlear implants), have issues. It's irreversible, relies on a mechanical implant which can and does fail and deteriorate. For those with some residual, it destroys their residual. You can't swim, and have to wear hats, etc if it rains.

I don't have one and probably won't get one. There's also probably going to be somatic cell transfers which have their own ethical issues... I wish it could just be treated now - by getting the gene to express itself properly, rather than needing an implant. Maybe for the future.

About the teaching aspect - I'm not sure there's a good solution. I've done well, but... you're always an outsider between two communities. There's just not enough deaf folks out there to really sustain a viable community, and that approach isn't working now, and really hasn't worked ever. And we don't really hear well enough to function well in outside society. We miss cues, find phones frustrating - how many times do you pick up a phone in your workplace? That will narrow your employability quite a bit in a world of cellphones. But, the solution isn't really to turn your back and try to isolate further, I think we have to work on more not less integration - in having us do as much as we possibly can with folks even if it's not certain how we will function.
