  • How politically correct are you??

Do you rail against political correctness and scream about how it's created an oppressive atmosphere in conversation, only to find that you yourself find certain things to be offensive?

Such as maybe derogatory jokes about veterans? Or the burning of your country's flag, or walking/trampling on your country's flag?
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

Why are you such an annoying and one note queen? I had been under the impression that your kind were supposed to be more interesting.

I am concerned that a subset of the contemporary Left has deeply illiberal tendencies, most notably the tendency to undermine freedom of thought and expression in the name of concern for people's sensibilities. E.g., "microagression." Now, the people who believe in that sort of thing are thankfully still on the fringe of liberalism, but not as fringe as I think they used to be.

"Political correctness" is of no importance to me.

In MrFun's case, it is a bit hypocritical that he regularly takes offense on behalf of other people, and then does stuff like put an upside-down flag in his avatar while whining "first amendment, first amendment!"

I'm not for restricting speech in any way (either through legal sanction or things like "shaming"), but I understand and appreciate the goal of these sorts of groups. I think many of us live in a bubble in which we are largely unaware of the ways in which we are capable of causing harm to other people via our words, actions, etc. I think raising awareness is a good thing and might allow us to experience empathy for people who differ from us in some way. I don't think this should censor us, however. I just want to live in a world where we only cause harm to other people on purpose rather than by accident.

(The other half is that I also believe people who are offended by unintentional insult would live better lives if they learned to find humor in what hurts them. I don't mean that they should laugh at racist/homophobic/sexist/whatever jokes, but that they should be able to look at the world through a lens of irreverence, because it helps put things into perspective. I mean, I'm a pretty privileged guy. I'm white, male, mostly straight, financially unburdened, blah blah blah. But I'm also nonreligious, Jewish by heritage, and a sufferer of mental illness. Those last three bits come with a bit of messy historical baggage, but I try my damndest not to be offended by anything that might be perceived as an insult against those three identities.)
