    • and Dinner to Putin

      Comment

      • A good article about how the Russian dictator Putin is all style and propaganda over substance.

Yet short-term success and long-term failure are the hallmark of Mr Putin’s rule. He scores stunning coups – against the oligarchs, against the opposition, against neighbours such as Georgia and Ukraine, in energy deals with China and Germany – yet at the end Russia languishes. Its economy remains unmodernised and dangerously dependent on natural resources, its institutions are weak, public services dire, the population shrinking, infrastructure crumbling, the economy shrinking, corruption rampant: no wonder Russians (notably the families of the people who run the country) are so keen to live abroad.

Maybe Russians deserve what they get if they are stupid enough to put up with the corruption, the lack of the rule of law, and the policies which make them even poorer.

That would massively improve their country. They should be so lucky.

Russia population 140 million in 2015 with a GDP of just $1.75 trillion. San Diego County population 3 million with a GDP of $250 billion. So San Diego has about $83,333 per person in yearly economic output while Russia has just $12,500 per person. Which means, on average, each person here is worth close to seven there despite being tiny in comparison.

And I am sure that they had it much better under Putin before he started his Ukrainian adventure

                • "We are slightly better off than immediately after a total economic and political collapse!"

Not exactly a strong rallying cry and not exactly a good record after 16 years under Putin. It is rather pathetic really.

                  • Let us not forget how badly Russians drive. Between the lack of street lights (because the corrupt government doesn't want to spend the money) and drunken poorly trained drivers who want to go 100 mph is icy white out conditions... This is the result.

                    • Jeffrey Gundlach claims that Putin needs to take over territory with Russian speakers because Russia will soon be facing a demographic nightmare. People like Serb have lost so much hope in the future, they've stopped having kids. http://money.cnn.com/2015/11/08/inve...ach/index.html

The World Bank at least agrees with the demographic trends.

                          • Germany is being repopulated by young refugees. Kind of ironic.

It is still a sign about how much Putin cares about the common russian citizen (i.e. not at all, because his Ukrainian adventure was more important to him, than the wellbeing of his citizens)
