Europe should have whole sale started fracking it's own natural gas fields 10 years ago as there are tons of them (almost as much gas as in the US) and it definitely should have started doing so five years ago when it became obvious Russia was using energy as a weapon. That they didn't two years ago when Vlad started invading several of his neighbors is inexcusable. They should be building gas pipelines across Turkey, from Morocco to Spain, from Tunis to Italy, it should be building LNG shipping terminals and ships to carry it. Yet they are dithering.

But, no, it is cheaper and politically easier to just stay dependent upon Russia. Lastly, no, these are not the US's sanctions as the EU also wanted to send a strong message to Putin for his invasions and annexation in Europe. It is time for the EU to get its butt in gear and sort out its natural gas situation so it isn't dependent upon unreliable Russian supplies. It can be done with the political will and it would even be good for the EU's economy.
