There are specific groups that are hurt by free trade, namely those who were being subsidized by trade restrictions and are not able to adapt.
The question is, should billions be kept in abject poverty into perpetuity, and all of humanity be worse off in the long run so some blue collar workers who are at worst (on welfare) better off than most of humanity have a slightly better life for a few years?

Free trade doesn't cause "lower prices". It puts businesses out of business in the smaller countries. Your delusional fantasy has the opposite effect.
The poor and middle classes are hit very hard by these phony free trade deals, that help the rich. For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Oh it isn't so bad... some businesses will go out of business, but maybe you'll have some crumbs of success in a few decades!!! You can only hope.
Total baloney. Free trade causes more poverty. It doesn't lift anyone out of poverty. And it certainly doesn't help smaller countries improve their situation EVER! Free trade causes infinite poverty. The rich ******* businessman in Wall Street needs people impoverished so he can employ them for 10 cents an hour. For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. Free trade has bankrupted many small businesses. It only benefits the multinational super corporations. Those who are worth more than the GDPs of certain small companied. They then proceed to strip the land of natural resources, providing absolutely no benefit for the native habitants. This is what diamond and mining companies do with free trade. For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. Again Fez shows how stupid he is. Free trade, or even marginally freer trade, has absolutely nothing to do with "trickle down economics", a phrase Fez throws around without even knowing what it means. No one has brought up marginal tax rates, Fez. You are as confused and as ignorant as you have always been.
As for your claim that free trade does not lower prices you are just full of crap. It results in a hell of a lot more competition and thus more choices for consumers. When I was a kid in 1988 you basically had three choices if you wanted to buy jeans. Generic store brand for $35, Levi's for $50, or some high end designer brand for around $80. That was in 1988 dollars and all were made in the US. Today you can walk into any Walmart or Target and find fairly good quality Chinese made jeans for $10-$15, jeans from Latin America for around $20, or American made designer jeans for around $100. That is in 2016 dollars.
Pick any goods sector you want and freer trade results in more competition, more choices for consumers, and lower average prices. You are an appallingly ignorant man, Fez.Last edited by Dinner; August 20, 2016, 01:26.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

One example of how locally free trade effected a previously protected industry but which lowered prices for consumers dramatically is the avocado market. In 1990 only US grown avocados were allowed to be sold in the us and 80% were grown in California with some 2/3rds grown in San Diego County. Avocados were called green gold because prices were so high, several dollars each in 1990 dollars. After NAFTA and later CAFTA imported avocados from Mexico and Central America were let in and not only did the price of avocados fall dramatically but their size got larger and quality improved. It turns out a semitropical fruit grows best closer to the tropics.
Despite the current fear of shortages due to a surge in popularity last week I got 5 very large ripe avocados for $1.
Yes, freer trade does indeed lower prices.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

My own business (a small one where I have run an operating loss for 7 years now to pay higher wages) would be better off with freer trade. All the red tape and tariffs involved in importing materials that aren't available locally have easily cost me twice the price of the materials and weeks of running around.
And being able to export to some markets would be even more difficult to impossible in some cases.

You throw around free trade as if it is some cure. You are woefully naive.
You are a fool and you don't even know what you are talking about. you are getting those cheap products while people die in factories in Bangladesh. You want ignorant? Look at the damn mirror for once.
Naive idiocy. Free trade is a cancer and does nothing to help natives of other countries. It only lines up the wealthy. Want proof? Look at how rich the rich have become in any of these countries. Latin America? Do you realize in countries like El Salvador a few families control 90% of the country's wealth? Meanwhile the country slides into violence because of very high poverty.
Free trade hasnt done a ****ing thing.

Most businesses fail. Free trade lowers the bar for new businesses, many of which are currently outright disallowed from existing by trade restrictions.

Trade restrictions actually promote corruption, as big businesses or those who specialize in facilitating import/export can pay off politicians to lock out their competitors, or to give them exceptions/look the other way.
Try starting a business dealing with import/export of goods and see how trade restrictions affect doing business first hand.

Don't tell that to workers in Bangladesh who are dying in textile factories.

All developing nations have had a long struggle to get to the point workers are well compensated and have a safe working environment. The US and other western countries had the same type of problems, and still do to some extent. It has nothing to do with free trade, other than free trade can help developing nations speed up the process of developing economies to the point where they can support high wages and the costly infrastructure required.
Leaving billions in abject poverty indefinitely is not a solution.
