Incidentally why shouldn't they call for the NFL to punish players who beat up their girlfriends. Are NOW members not allowed to be NFL fans?

The NFL would not have been responsible for domestic violence. Would you want something like that to happen to you or your business?
So you really believe that justice should be different for star players? That touchdowns should trump off-the-field behavior, including violence toward women and children? Because it sure looks like that's your position.
The NFL itself disagrees. Long before Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, star players have been suspended for a year or more - even if not convicted in court - usually for substance abuse (not just PEDs) and gambling. All-Pro players among the many who missed a year or more for off-field issues include:
Paul Hornung
Alex Karras
Ricky Williams
Dexter Manley
Michael Vick
Of these, only Vick was ever charged with a crime. The suspensions were done at the discretion of the commissioner, then later through a league discipline office. The NFL instituted a formal player conduct policy in 2006, at the direction of then-new commissioner Roger Goodell. He stated:
"It is important that the NFL be represented consistently by outstanding people as well as great football players, coaches, and staff. We hold ourselves to higher standards of responsible conduct because of what it means to be part of the National Football League. We have long had policies and programs designed to encourage responsible behavior, and this policy is a further step in ensuring that everyone who is part of the NFL meets that standard. We will continue to review the policy and modify it as warranted."Last edited by -Jrabbit; October 6, 2014, 12:42.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

You aren't understanding that the NFL is a business. They make business decisions. If they want to hire a criminal because he is the best person for the job that's their right and it's a smart move. Also, it makes for a better business, and in this case better football.
Btw, you are clearly contradicting yourself. You said the NFL is not responsible for what happened to Janay. What are they responsible for if they keep those players accused of dv? Are you saying it is immoral to hire people who have been accused of a crime?I drank beer. I like beer. I still like beer. ... Do you like beer Senator?

The fact that the NFL did not batter Janay Rice does not mean it's smart business for them to protect her attacker, whom they employ.
You claim to understand that the NFL is a business, and that they make business decisions.
Yet you seem incapable of comprehending that suspending players who violate the NFL personal conduct policy is a smart business decision.
Businesses are free to hire whomever they wish. But if they (like the NFL) have a morals clause in their employment contract and a personal conduct policy, they would be smart to hesitate before hiring someone with a history of violating that policy.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

You seem incapable of understanding that those applying outside pressure might have had a fvcking point. The NFL understands: it needs to goodwill of the public just as much, if not more, than it needs a particular good player. Players can be replaced much more readily than public image.
For the record, technically speaking,it was the Baltimore Ravens who fired Ray Rice. The NFL suspended him indefinitely. He is a free agent.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011
