Elon Musk seems to be the most credible source on the subject. Though, this seems to be more a discussion on the economics. Seems like solar charging stations may be the best way (with current efficiencies) to integrate solar into an EV system.

That Q&A is also 8 years old.
To us, it is the BEAST.

can add 30 miles per hour of sunlight (in optimal conditions).
And this is the caveat. The major problem at least in rural areas is that it's just not feasible to go with solo electric over actual gas or a hybrid. Hybrid makes sense for the acceleration, but there's really nothing that beats gas. Electric is not there when you need it most. I'd love to see their range stats in the middle of winter at -30 with the heater on full bore.

Electric cars will be useless in certain niche conditions, so they have no future whatsoever

You should try to read the entirety of a person's posts before cherry-picking one bit of bull**** that's already been addressed.

I can actually envision properly insulated vehicles that would reduce heating needs, if it comes to such. On hot areas, the AC can be powered by the extra solar power, if needed. I know that there's some versions of the Audi Allroad that have PVs integrated into the sun roof, which are used to ventilate the vehicle if left parke din the sun, so you don't return to a car-shaped oven.

Considering the gains in PV efficiency in recent years, only an idiot would dismiss the possibility outright.

(I'm finding quite a range of figures regarding the effectiveness of solar paneling on EV's and hybrid vehicles)
Sure if you leave it out on a bright day maybe but if you're talking about a continuous drive, probably not. And they're expensive.

Sava, chemically nothing beats gasoline. It has portability, energy density, etc. Solar does great for fixed structures, not cars.

                  Oh. wait.

I'm talking -30. In the winter. I know you don't get winter in Argenchilea, but I'm from Canada. Solar panels are goddamned useless when they get iced over.

Economic costs offset. Again, same thing I told BK:

Ben should read the acceleration stats for both Tesla and NanoFlow vehicles.
Oh, and Nanoflow's energy efficiency is ~80%.

Uh. Why would I care about their acceleration stats? I care about their range.

Every little bit helps. I wouldn't mind solar cells on the roof.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Insulation materials are getting better, cheaper and lighter. Current car insulation is pretty much noise dependent, with more expensive cars having better insulation. It's almost exclusively placed on the floor, between the passenger and engine compartments, and to a lesser extent the doors, since that's where most of the outside noise comes from (generated by the vehicle itself, engine and tires running against the ground). Since you are riding behind a massive heat source you need to cool anyways, providing some excess heat to the passenger compartment is no big deal at all, and any insulation placed to prevent heat loss is pretty much wasted money (never mind how cheap it is, it's still more expensive than free).

If you have an electric car, then 200 extra bucks upfront on the price of the car could be a good idea if it will mean electric savings from not having to spend as much energy in heating the cabin.

I wonder how you managed to avoid all the glaciers. If we don't get winters over here, and have a few of those, you must have had trouble moving around them.

... Yes? Which is why I mentioned their use in hot climates, that was already happening 10 years ago, so it can't be that bad an idea?

BK regularly drives over 300 miles per day. That's probably why he can only live in a tiny room and can barely make rent.

Yeah. Ok. Still completely ****ing useless in the winter.

We have to shovel a foot of snow off the goddamned roof. Just to get into the car. Then you have to scrape the front and the back and sides. Then start the car, and let it warm up for 15 minutes.

And that's not even counting the time if you have to plow the driveway.

THIS WAS MY DAILY ****ing ROUTINE!

What the **** is a solar panel going to do?

Yeah no ****ing **** we have issues in the winter. It's a constant ****ing effort up there just to go about your business. A muppet mobile couldn't get out of the snow, let alone survive in it.

And my entire point was that they are useless outside of certain climates. TY. Glad we had this discussion. Gasoline itself has it's issues when it's -30. Electricity is useless.
