The real issues are price - the only car that can do it costs 80k$ and the infrastructure which is just not in place. I hope both of those will change for the better over the next decade.
You've never experienced the Midwest, have you. I have several workers, out of a workforce of about 20, who commute nearly 100 miles. One way. Every day.

    ...and then there's college sports.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

That's not what I said, I was talking about why I wouldn't buy one.

I know people who do that but from Rochester to Buffalo, which is a similar distance.

that's crazy. is there a huge difference in living costs between the area where your plant is and cities about 100 miles away?

Yes there is a BIG difference. There are a lot of people that commute to downtown Chicago from Wisconsin and Indiana everyday.
So they can live in houses 2 to 3 times bigger than they could afford in the city.
(of course many of those people just prefer not to live in Illinois)

Also, you are wrong. Feigning ignorance is a classic comedy method.

yeah i imagine the difference would have to be big to justify what must be a 3 hour commute monday to friday. i wouldn't do it, but different people have different priorities i suppose.

To be honest, most of them do that commute in considerably less than three hours.

I bet slapping some photovoltaic material to the roof of those cars would extend their range.

Not by a lot. Solar panels generate very little power.

Some quick googling reveals that a 300w/h system can add 30 miles per hour of sunlight (in optimal conditions). Drive to work, sits outside for 8+ hours... there you go.

Considering the gains in PV efficiency in recent years, only an idiot would dismiss the possibility outright.

(I'm finding quite a range of figures regarding the effectiveness of solar paneling on EV's and hybrid vehicles)
