Virginia's 7th district is red but it's only a 60-40 district, usually Republicans like to gerrymander districts at least to 70-30, so this just might have put the district in play. Especially if Brat turns out to be another tea bagger crazy like Sharron Angle.

You accorded no mercy for Akin, no quarter shall be spared for Cantor. Last I recall, didn't Cantor support cutting Akin off during an election? Actions have consequences.

Had Cantor actually supported the base, he'd have sailed through. He fought a war and lost. Everyone remembers Napoleon. Nobody remembers the Duke of Brunswick.

I do hope Dowd is getting royalties for your penetrating insights.

I haven't read the NYT in a while and instead just used wiki to look up Eric Cantor and then his Congressional district. You should try it sometime and maybe you'll learn something. You have no where to go but up, right?

Akin wasn't even the Tea Party choice that race.

I could, but then I have Oerdin to correct me.

I was unaware he was the establishment republican selection. If you're going to cut off prolifers during an election because they actually oppose abortion - you're fighting the wrong war. Too many republicans are willing to destroy the party to ensure they win. How did McCain advance the Republican party? How did Romney?

This is a reckoning that has been long in coming. What exactly does the republican party stand for? Small government, support for traditional marriage, opposition to abortion and Obamacare?

Or just more of the same? Democrat Lite hasn't won us a general election.

That is, sadly, what will happen. It's always what the extremists want to happen and thus the reason they're trying to primary literally everyone who doesn't have 100% ideological purity or who dares to have a different idea no matter how minor. It doesn't matter that 90% of these primary challenges fail because they only have to get one incumbant and the rest of the party will lurch even further to the right in an attempt to ward off primary challenges. That's how the extremists push the Republican Party ever further out on the extreme right.

It's gotten so bad I don't think Ronald Reagan could survive a Republican Primary if he were alive today. That's how far to the right they've moved and that's how strict the ideological litmus tests have become.

If anything Reagan is to the right of Cantor. You're right, the ideologies have shifted - massively leftward.

Thank you, Ben, for confirming, yet again, that you have no idea what you're talking about. Nixon enacted price controls and created the EPA, Ford pushed strong anti-pollution laws, Reagan raised taxes a number of times, even over the objections of his own party, because he thought the deficits his tax cuts created needed to be reduced. I could go on and on.

The reality, as all nonbrain damaged people already know, is the Republican Party has moved much further to the right over the last 40 years. Far, far to the right and new ideas just aren't welcome as their ideology has become codified orthodoxy, any person who dares to disagree even a tiny bit gets called a RINO, and stupid people like you lynch them even though it means the party loses seats and becomes even more marginal.

If only the Democrats had the honesty to oust their own do nothing Congressional leadership. Seriously, it's time to clean house across the board.
