Just think. If this were the Bush administration, the story would be "MURICA HERO FREEDOMS HIS WAY TO VICTORY"... followed by the terror alert being raised and instructions for everyone to be "vigilant".

Bush was a lousy president but that does not mean he shared every flaw we see in the current administration.

Do you really think Bush would even consider returning acknowledged "terrorists" to other acknowledged "terrorists"? I'd even go so far as to say the Bush administration would be too pigheaded to even consider a simple cash payment to such people, regardless of expected return.

I could almost imagine an under the table iran contra style deal however but it would probably be impossible pull off quietly.

Except they're not? There were government officials in the Taliban government, so not at all nice guys, but not accused of terrorist acts either and instead even the Bush administration classified them as POWs. They were cleared for release ~5 years ago. Oh, and, yes, you still do prisoner exchanges even for some of our POWs which you might not like. We did it in Vietnam and Korea and after we got them back, filling our vow to leave no man behind, some of them really were court marshaled. The point is you get them back first then give them their trial.
