I didn't drop out of high school, I just did a mediocre job because I had no real motive to succeed or thrive, only to do well enough to not get screamed at. I effectively had no social life, and meds only partially resolved my depression. And then there was the fact that, even back then, you pretty much had to try to actually fail high school, especially if you're learning-disabled (your advocates will push to let you get away with most everything, and you'll catch on to that quick). It's even worse now, I think.

Anyway, I was a miserable, arrogant, friendless misanthrope. Then I got to college, where they actually allowed me to fail, and shame finally gave me some motivation. Not a lot, but some. Still made mistakes (English major!), but not as bad, and I think my wife did a lot to screw my head on straighter. I think Lori is really the closest match to me on here, though even then there are stark differences.

I dropped out of Uni and only went back 8 years later, when I started to get my stuff back in track (thanks to an amazing woman). I didn't start taking meds until after HS though (my parents only started worrying about something being wrong with me after I horribly flunked my first year of uni.

They guy seemed really depressed to me. I wonder what his relationship with his roommates was like. It seems like it would be hard to be friends with that guy or even talk to him -- and social isolation can have all sorts of negative consequences.

To be fair to Alby, one of his girlfriends was a gold digger in a way. He dated an actual prostitute (who he never had sex with) who borrowed $300 from him and never paid him back.
