It's going to take ten minutes for them to develop their own rocket engine. We'll be fine. Plus, the SpaceX crew capsule will be ready before the contract runs out. Orbital will be fine as well.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Looks like the Delta IIs don't use the Russian engine, and we have a 2-year supply of engines. There isn't even going to be an interruption.

Yes. Sierra Nevada is also developing a manned crew capsule which is supposed to be ready by 2017, as is Boeing.

That said, the retirement of the space shuttle without something to immediately replace it was criminally retarded.

The Russians only said they won't send engines for military purposes anyway, right? We have our own for those.

If the Russians decided that they weren't sending any more missions to the ISS and ordered their astronauts back to Earth that would be a very long shift for the American astronauts.
                Anyone remember this?

I'm guessing that they will end up deciding to extend the ISS mission past 2020 however. 2020 is a long way away, Putin may not even be in power then, and when 2020 comes along they'll see it's to their benefit to keep it going and will keep it going. If not, the ISS will probably remain orbital anyway. The Japanese and Europeans have invested too much to watch it crash into the atmosphere, to say nothing of our own investment.

The ISS is just throwing good money after bad, I don't see why anyone should care if it stays in the sky.

We are not dependent. Space X has rockets and capsules ready to go plus they have already been tested and have flown in space.

You're an idiot, as always. The Republicans pushed through the law killing the space shuttles back during the Bush years and I can't even say it was a bad law because it opened the way for private companies. There are numerous private companies with launch systems and the best is with Space X plus their dragon capsule is ready to go and has been tested in the configuration which can carry people, moron. They launch from Vandenberg AFB in Santa Barbara county, CA.

This is the Falcon 9 rocket, owned by Space X, with a Dragon capsule space craft which can carry up to 7 astronauts into space. It has been into space before on autopilot ferrying cargo to the space station but it is designed and built to carry people. It flew successfully in 2010 and 2012 and there are several built and ready to go. They are built in Hawthorne, CA in greater LA and launched from Vandenberg in Santa Barbara County.
