Who thought it was a good idea for the U.S. to be dependent on the Russians to get to space?!

NASA isn't a failure at everything, but it is unfortunetly one when it comes to manned space flight in the last two decades. You can continue to live in the glory days if you want and I'll gladly ignore you and NASA like I do that 40 year old at the end of the local dive bar still wearing a letter jacket.

NASA has some important programs still that have not failed despite their best efforts, they need to focus on them and pull them off to prove to taxpayers and themselves they can still play in the industry as an equal.

I just... don't understand your "complaint" about NASA. I mean, if it's just pure ideological idiocy, I can dismiss it... as I do with most everything you say.

Even all the bull**** they've been doing since the 80's has been invaluable. The only reason we haven't done more is because of dolts (like you) who complain about the cost. NASA could've gotten to Mars by now if it was made a priority.

but yeah, I'm sure Richard Branson is offering multi-million dollar rides in the upper atmosphere... simulating zero G for rich people. The great triumph of private space flight.

How far we've fallen on account of relying on private industry. If anything is a failure, it's that.
To us, it is the BEAST.

There are very good and solid reasons why it's not been done. Look at the fuel requirements for getting there and getting back.

Plus once you get there you'd have to deal with all those scary Martians and their death rays.

Going to Mars is literally the next step in human events. Until we do that, we're stagnant... and likely doomed to extinction.

Going to Mars would cook the astronauts.
There hasn't yet been found a way to shield off gamma rays and cosmic rays and what not.
They'll go to mars then die of cancer
              (or so I've heard)

You're an idiot because, no, I did not say that. In this specific case, yes, it is their fault. Deal with it and stop trying to deflect.

Wrong. The whole reason we don't have a shuttle replacement is NASA ****ups and foot dragging on hiring private space companies.

Wrong. It's because NASA hired too many rent-seeking private contractors who delivered mediocre results.

That didn't help either. But NASA tried to keep too much stuff internal.
