Ming is spot on about it here. Absolutely spot on. Why doesn't Poly have a section on Paradox's games? Why don't they have 'Let's play' or AARs hosted here? But to each their own. If that's what people really want, they can post there. However, I don't see it as the main driving issue to revitalize this site.
What the site needs is more relevant content... that should be the focus.
What exactly on-topic has Poly really provided? Why can't I find the greatest Civ2 scenarios ever? I have to go to CFC for them. Where are all the mods?
This site could be a really happening place instead of a graveyard if they:
1, broadened their focus.
2, had actual site sponsored competitions.
Look at the stuff that does get traffic - fantasy football. Is it really so hard to believe that Poly couldn't get folks that already play together to play actual games together?
I know what brought me here - a chance to play games online at my own place with some, damn, damn good civvers. That got me in the door and the community kept me here.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

NARGLE SPLIFFLE FARK. I specifically did not make the claim that the lax moderation drove away users. GARRRRRRRR. I only claimed that the site can clearly survive on stricter moderation, because it did so for a very long time.Originally posted by Ming View PostAs Rah pointed out, I didn't make the rules at that time... I was asked to enforce the rules established by Mark and Dan.
But the loss of traffic to this site had far more to do with problems in the uploads/site usability and lack of support to the mod community.
By the time MarkG left, CFC had taken over the majority of the on topic posting.
Indeed. Post in the CivBE forum lately? But to each their own. If that's what people really want, they can post there. However, I don't see it as the main driving issue to revitalize this site.

Actually, that comment wasn't really directed at anything you claimed or said. I was addressing the general feelings by "some" that the moderation under the Mark/Dan was the reason this site succeeded or failed. This site was at it's best when it had the content, and the leaders of the civ community. Unfortunately, this site failed them and drove them away due to many technical issues. It's really sad that even back in the day, if somebody was looking for a mod or patch, it was easier to find and and download at CFC than it was here. Those problems were never addressed.Originally posted by Lorizael View PostNARGLE SPLIFFLE FARK. I specifically did not make the claim that the lax moderation drove away users. GARRRRRRRR. As far as CivBE goes, I look forward to it. However, right now, there really isn't a lot of new information available and much to talk about... YET

I don't know what I ever did to you Tuberski, but okay.Originally posted by Tuberski View PostThis:

This sums up my views exactly.Originally posted by rah View PostI didn't make the rules then and ignored many of them but yes it was run tighter than now.
And as you stated it was in the heydays of Civ3 and Civ4 so the higher traffic was probably more due to that than any level of strictness in the OT.
If people really want strict they can go to CFC. I post on topic there, but their OT is too strict and really boring.
I posted a few times at CFC and was almost immediately banned. I wasn't even trolling (much), I was just not kowtowing to whatever juiced in crybaby had the ear of the moderator. And they made me change my name to "*****".
Moderation doesn't make a site good, and it doesn't make it friendlier to newcomers. It just gives bullies and losers an excuse to kick out people who don't fit in with their cliques. If we want more people at this site we have to give them content worth coming here for. As it is, I come here for socializing, and go to CFC for mods and whatnot.
That said, if Lancer and Nik want their own little sandbox to play around in, and Aeson's cool with it, I got no problem with it.John Brown did nothing wrong.

I submit that there's a medium to be found between the member trolling that goes in here and the mod-trolling that is de rigueur there. -A goldilocks zone, if you will. You do not have to like it or understand it, or certainly not participate in it, but it is a thing - that one needs not be a total prat to prefer.

Okay, then thanks for saying that. It doesn't fit me and it doesn't fit the people I've helped to get together. It definitely doesn't fit the women who have been called "whores" during the process. Aeson tried to explain that to the forum a long time ago, he's engaged to a wonderful gal who my wife and I helped to get together. A real, sweet, nice human being read what was being written about her here. Its mean, vile, sick and pathetic and so are the people who continue it, Aeson had no more success than I had that I could see anyway. That's why I was surprised when you chose to join them because you are none of those things. Perhaps you didn't understand, and now you do.Originally posted by Tuberski View PostIt's a joke. But, please don't try to tell me you do't know people that the joke fits.

I do not believe so - it certainly calls for leadership on the part of the management, and integrity, too.Originally posted by Felch View PostSadly the goldilocks zone exists only in an unstable orbit.
It will be interesting to see if mods who clearly don't really want to moderate can hit the Just Right and keep it up...

It will actually be more interesting to see if the forum gets used by more than just a few people
And as far as modding that forum, right now, no mod has been assigned to it yet so I'm not really sure exactly which mods you are talking about when you say "mods who clearly don't really want to moderate"
If you are so concerned, why don't you mod the new forum since you seem to think you know exactly what's needed
