There is a kernel of truth to this mixed in with a whole lot of assumptions about the poor which are completely unfounded. As Aeson said, you're assuming equal opportunity which doesn't really exist. Yes, if you have extra income saving it rather than consuming it can result in capital accumulation and by lowering standards of living you can lower your consumption rate thus allowing for even greater savings. What happens when people can't lower their consumption rate any more? They've cut out everything they can but they're still only barely making subsistence? We have millions of people in that situation and we call them low wage workers; they drive old cars or just take the bus because that's all they can afford, they shop at second hand stores because they can't afford new clothes, yet they still barely have enough food to survive. Many of them are trying to upgrade their jobs skills and education to climb up the ladder but to do that they need subsidized education to help make that possible yet these education and job training programs are exactly the types of programs Republicans always try to cut along with the social safety net programs which help the working poor to survive.

The propaganda that poor people are just lazy and if they're poor then it must be their fault and never because of anything outside of their control... Well, it's just complete made up nonsense in the majority of the cases. It's pretty telling how modern Republican talking points are almost exact replicas of the excuses conservative English Tories used to justify their criminal negligence of the starving during the Irish potato famine. Right down to phrases like "culture of dependency", "laziness and idleness", and (of course) blaming the starving for things completely outside of their control like the weather and crop diseases. I hope you take the time to read this link because it's actually pretty damn good.

Though this example is one where savings/investing looks about as bad as it can get. Frugal single guy getting married to a woman who can't comprehend why someone wouldn't spend all they have ... should end well ...

How does one get engaged without realizing about how much the other person earns? Anyways, there is frugal and then there is this. Living life

Going out is highly overrated... and rarely, if ever, worth the expense
To us, it is the BEAST.

I realize that one can't smoke weed and play console video games outside (or at least its difficult to), but it can be a great deal of fun.

I don't play console games very often. I mostly watch movies and TV shows (in addition to posting here occasionally). When I game, it's primarily on PC.

Going out would be awesome if there weren't people everywhere I try to go. People suck. They are annoying, loud, stupid, smelly, fat, ugly, self-obsessed, and like to talk about stupid bull****. If people were at my house, I'd go out more.

The confused person who wrote into Slate about him didn't think he was a boring ass.
