It's one of those trite quotes about leadership you hear all the time but I think it's a load of crap.

Great followers and great leaders might share some common traits, but they are also separated by key traits.

Most obviously the intense ambition to become the leader. Being ambitious enough to grab the leadership position is not good follower behaviour.

So you think calling them bossy stops them from being leaders?

Yes. Culturally leadership behaviour in girls is stigmatised and praised in boys.

            It's an issue worth highlighting.

And you only need to look at the percentages of women who are in leadership positions compared to men to see that there is a massive imbalance.

No. Also look at the fact that girls don't want to be leaders. YOU want them to be leaders.

Also, false narrative that society tries to prevent women from being leaders. This isn't 1950.

                1. Who says they don't want to be leaders? They obviously do as some manage it despite the obstacles
                2. If they don't why not and how can we remove the barriers?
                3. Why wouldn't we want women to have the same opportunities to leadership as men?

Not everyone wants to be a leader.

Possibly because it's so much harder for them, the women who do become leaders are better than the men.

In a study of more than 16,000 leaders, women were perceived to be more effective leaders than men. Here's a look at why.

Girls say they don't want to be leaders because people don't like leaders.

                      What barriers? Calling people bossy?

                      They already do.

There is no other reason to criticize someone for being "bossy" except to discourage them from trying to take charge.

The best leaders I've ever had the privilege of working with had the following.

                            1. They had a vision. They knew where they wanted the organization to go.
                            2. They were successful in communicating that vision.
                            3. They were courageous. They were willing to stand up for their vision at great personal cost to themselves.

                            Were they bossy? No.

People are bossy when they believe that their directives will not be followed, and they believe that they have to supervise in order to ensure that the work gets done.

Is this great leadership? Great leadership is when you can pick up the phone, call someone you've not spoken to in 3 years and have them drop their present task to do something for you.

I've seen it. I've worked with fantastic, fantastic leaders. And the best of all of them is a woman.
