I think it's quite a remarkable feat, going to somewhere like Surinam and returning with that kind of closely-observed almost hallucinatory art. I was put in mind of Richard Dadd, except of course she didn't try to cram a whole jungle on a single page...

Ah. Do you know the art of the old Kingdom of Benin ? I worked on a project about the punitive expedition to Benin in 1897 three years ago and it was a great combination of old love and new enthusiasm.

The bronze (actually many are brass) plaques have wonderful depictions of the warriors of Benin :



but the art of the Oba's palace complex is alas scattered all over Europe and the U.S., although the British Museum does have some magnificent holdings.

My favourite image is this one :



Not a warrior as such, but the hunter with the ecstatic looking cat is just delightful.

I'm not of the opinion that all Americans are ignorant about Africa you know. Just a select few.... like the one who backed Jonas Savimbi in Angola's civil war, based on a couple of hours chatting to him.

End result ? Anti-personnel mines killed 40 000 + Angolans, the war left nearly half a million dead, including 331 000 + children. According to John Stockwell, former C.I.A. officer :

The glaring weakness of the U.S. program was a lack of information about our allies and about the interior of Angola.

No sheeeit.

Anyway. I've always enjoyed African art, even from when I was at school. The Benin plaques were an easy way in, because unlike some fetish, mask or sculptural pieces they're relatively representational and recognisable. Now that I'm bigger I can afford to buy Dogon granary doors and Akamba masks.

I'd love to own this :
