  • No, and if that's the worst thing you have to put up with, thank the stars.

    • No, the worst I have to put up with is that he's taken to referring to me as "three point one four two duh duh duh," because he thinks I'm some super smart physics guy, which is apparently embodied in me knowing pi to a few digits. I thought I was done with that kind of crap in high school. Ugh.

      • About 10 years ago, our company was bought and they had their guy come in to run the department that I was running and I had to report to him. For two years he tried to get me fired. He reduced my salary hoping I would quit. He made sure I never got a bonus by rigging the ratings and made sure I got all the ****ty assignments. I dreaded going to work every morning wondering what new torture he would devise for me.

So count your blessing that all you have to worry about is being called pi.

(for the record, his incompetence was eventually revealed and he was fired, and I got my position back, but it did take a few years to get all the salary I lost back)

        • Yeah, that's pretty terrible. My bosses have always liked me. Even the boss who fired me liked me until it became obvious that I'd stopped doing any work.

Go to HR. That's not cool. Get documentation now. From what I gather, his behavior is completely unacceptable.

            • Sava is a weak willed fool. To deal with this threat properly, you need to find out where he lives, go there in the middle of the night with a nailgun, some plywood, a gas can, and some road flares. Seal the ground floor exits with plywood, and burn his house down while he sleeps.

You could just put up with some guy making stupid little jokes, and not take everything so damn seriously.

Read the thread title, dude. That's what I have been doing, which is why I didn't mention it until now because it's the "worst" thing my boss does. But it is annoying. One of the ideas my therapist and I have talked about is that some of my asocial behavior made sense when I was a tiny kid who was being picked on all the time, but as an adult living in an adult world, it doesn't serve me. So it's just mildly annoying to know that I'm still not living entirely in an adult world, even when I have a 50-something boss.

When it comes to things like teasing, the only real difference between kids and adults is subtlety.

                      • Eh. When I was a kid, I was picked on by my best friend's stepfather in a not terribly subtle fashion on a regular basis. He had some doubts as to my masculinity.

I think there's a difference between teasing and being picked on. My friends tease me regularly, and I tease them back. But it's done from a position of respect. We tease each other because we like to tell jokes, and sometimes we like to tell jokes about each other. Teasing between people who can otherwise engage in meaningful conversation doesn't bother me.

Picking on someone is different. Then it's a type of bullying, a way to hurt others and feel powerful. What my boss is doing doesn't really hurt me, though. It's annoying only because it is superficially very similar to the way I was picked on as a kid. My guess is his intent is just to be funny, but he's not being funny in a particularly clever way. It's also possible that he believes I'm smarter than he is, so teasing me about it is a minor way for him to feel slightly more powerful. But that's some serious pop psych bull**** there for which I have essentially no evidence.

I'm getting old and close to retirement so that option wasn't as attractive. If I had been younger I probably would have. (and I was making a good chunk of change with maxed out benefits in terms of vacation, vesting, etc.)
And I didn't want the bastard to win.

                              • Billions is wildy unrealistic. But, 10's of millions is within the realm of possibility.
