Things like that, our complicity in exploitative labour practice in 3rd world countries, our unrestrained ravaging of the environment and destruction of the atmosphere, our views on equality (still)... probably loads more things.

You're trying to make sense of waaaaaay too much. It not a fix it manual for your car. You only have to make sense out of what the author intends for you to make sense of. You aren't going to make sense out of why God makes a bet with Satan. It's added to the story to support the theme that there are things that Job doesn't know. You are suppose to focus on Job, not whether or not babies died and stuff like that.

                That's a terrible idea.

An advantage I have over my sister is that she isn't a possible sex partner... so she can't hold sex hostage to get me to do things.

I would feel sorry for future guys if they started doing that... it'd be like having a girlfriend you can't break up with

For an intelligent person that was some truly pathetic reading comprehension. Or did you just skip over the part where I said that judging history through moral relativism is so utterly foolish?

Um... do you understand what moral relativism is? Because what I described was the result of rejecting moral context.

                              • Without looking it up give us an informed interpretation of Job.
One of my favorite books. The Devil challenges God because he's trying to divide God's blessings here on earth from Faith. He argues that believers only believe in God because God blesses them, not because they truly love God. Much in the way that God is bribing them with blessings, take the blessings away and you'll see the faith go away.

So, God tests Job by permitting the Devil to attack Job. God isn't a bully because he restricts the harm that the Devil can cause, and restores everything taken away from Job by the Devil. It's not God inflicting the pain and the curses, but the Devil. God is simply, choosing not to act to immediately relieve the curses given by the Devil.

For Christians - we are taught that faithfulness is the most important virtue and that patience and endurance through trials and suffering is the only way to go. Suffering, can temper and harden faith when tested, rather than weakening it. It's a good book. We are also told that just because someone suffers does not mean that they suffer because they have turned away from God. Suffering happens to everyone. As Ecclesiastes says, "rain falls on both the wicked and the righteous". So do the righteous suffer.
