The thing is though, why would anyone edit the hosts file to include references to poly

what if you try nslookup apolyton.net ?

It sounds like you might need some garlic and holy water on that old machine.

On my old machine, when I nslookup apolyton.net it shows the right ip 108.162.198.232 but when I ping apolyton.net it returns the old ip 173.203.213.57
              go figure.

That should not be possible, but since it's windows there might be an explanation -though, it's beyond my level of magic

Obviously beyond mine also. Maybe I can get Snoopy to look at it next week. He's much better at this stuff than I am.

Well, if he finds the reason, then please post it - I'm pretty curious.

Hosts file is an extensionless file in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\

Open it in a text editor (like notepad++, regular ntepad works as well) and search for references to apolyton

That is pretty weird. Like MikeH said, the DNS isn't being updated properly on that computer for some reason. Robert hasn't turned off the old server yet.

It's pretty obvious. The NSA's man in the middle hasn't been pointed at the new server.

Ding Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner. Snoopy showed me where the host file was and there was a reference to poly in it. It works fine now.
How it got there is a mystery to me. But then, at my age, there are many mysteries.

                                Thanks for all your help.
