At the simplest, the differences include that when you walk, you wear the heel of your shoe due to the heel to toe walking gait whereas when you run, you wear out the ball of the shoe due to the typical running gait.
Obviously, that's not to say you can't walk in your running shoes at all but you shouldn't have a pair of shoes with 100 running miles on it and 100 walking miles.
