Seriously? I'm betting the ratings for next season of Duck Dynasty are through the roof.

No, we tried letting one half of the country do something the other half considered a crime against humanity (or its nineteenth-century equivalent). Merely letting people express the opinion that they should be allowed to work black people to death would probably not have torn the country apart. In theory. I'm not sure that most human beings are actually capable of being truly tolerant of repugnant beliefs, so this is all a bit pie-in-the-sky.

OTOH, we have progressed to the point where we no longer think the law itself should be used to crush heretics directly. Maybe eventually we'll mature to the point where we stop punishing them socially as well.

Regardless of outcome, the assertion was that A&E had the foresight to actually plan this fiasco. There is no evidence to support the claim.

When faced with the choice between blind luck and inspired genius, I'm betting blind luck is more prevalent than genius, particularly given this is A&E TV programming. The obvious exception to the blind luck v. genius thing is Oerdin's singular genius in being inevitably wrong such that even via blind luck he isn't correct.

        • It wouldn't be the first time a company conspired to make a false controversy in order to prop up the ratings of a failing show. In fact, I hear it is pretty much standard practice among many media types. Tons of us were predicting this was a PR stunt (to attract people like Ben and Sloww) and that the guy would make a triumphant return to the show just in time for the new season; which is in fact exactly what happened.

          • Have to agree with Oerdin. People are paid to think this **** up. It isn't hard.

Considering that Robertson's "suspension" fortuitously coincided with a time period where they weren't filming, it seems like A&E knew perfectly well that any suspension was more symbolic than having any real effect. Of course, they may have lucked out into the controversy, but when the controversy started, A&E knew exactly how to play it.

Its New Coke/Classic Coke all over again. Blind dumb luck as opposed to marketing genius. The timing was fortuitous, their response was not measured or planned, it was knee jerk. Both in initial response to GLAAD and the unforseen firestorm of death threats the CEO was receiving.

Call me a cynic but there is absolutely no reason to think A&E is smart enough to pull off a branding stunt of the kind you ascribe to.

                  • No its not falling for the "there is a conspiracy" gambit. The obvious reading of the situation is more likely the correct read.

                    • The CEO got a barrage of death threats from Christians? I didn't hear about that.

Post #25. I called it waaaaay early on. Yes, it was a quite obvious reading of the situation.

You inferred a conspiracy. Color me shocked.

                            • I inferred A&E using a controversy to their benefit. Ie, the obvious reading of the situation.

                              • I don't see how suspending him made the situation any more controversial (such that it would really work to A&E's benefit). I can believe it was a knee jerk reaction but also an action that they knew had no real downside.

Running a marathon after suspending him on the other hand. I don't see how that isn't deliberate.
