I think that direction is changing. Similar that almost all large companies have phased out pensions and switched to 401k type plans.
Public employees might argue that they pay into their pension plans. But they're not forced to pay into SS so at least they're paying into something that they can reasonably be assured that they're going to get back. And SS payout don't even come near what these pensions are going to pay out and aren't reduced by outside income. .

It gets strange how many people who work for big private companies act shocked when they realize their health plans are much better than mine... I'm far more anti public sector union than I am anti union in general:

1) private sector unions are self limiting phenomena, while public sector unions persist due to the monopoly provision (and forced funding) of many government services
2) in part due to (1) public sector workers are vastly overpaid bureaucratic cretins (blanket statement yadda yadda there are exceptions)
3) public sector workers would already represent a relatively privileged section of society without unions. They tend to have college degrees, and essentially have jobs for life. Redistributing money to them via bloated contracts is obscene.

Ah, so you want to ignore facts, like all the other cities who are doing well, while providing better benefits and wages to their public sector employees as compared to the exploitative private sector workforce.

You're only focusing on Detroit because it fits your own constructed narrative/agenda.

This is why I am personally opposed to things like elected school boards

In the private system we have appointed boards. In our system, we have a board with the bishop, and all the rest of the directors. All are appointed, and have been there for a long time. There is a parent representative on the board, but aside from that, we don't have community input.

This is actually a good thing as it frees us from the local concerns for the most part. As a parochial school we aren't expected to be run like a democracy either.

How would this be run in the public system? The present system sucks, but there has to be some accountability to the electorate with the use of public funds. If we aren't offering good schooling, then enrollment would dry up pretty quickly. There's no such check on the public system.
