They're actually even worse than this would make it seem. Not only are they prolonging Detroit's suffering by trying to block bankruptcy, they largely caused it in the first place by negotiating these outrageous pensions and benefits. Of course they aren't the only reason Detroit sucks.

Also, in a lot of municipalities, it's a case of the inmates running the asylum--the only major voting bloc is the public employees (because no one else bothers to vote in such trivial elections), who elect people that will increase their salaries and benefits. This is why I am personally opposed to things like elected school boards, since in most school districts basically only teachers and other school system employees bother to vote. It IS possible to have an excess of democracy.

What really killed Detroit is lack of proper urban planning a.k.a the "donut syndrome" from urban flight.

Thousands of cities around the world offer employee benefits similar to Detroit and they're still not bankrupt.

Link #2 seems to only compare federal employees (not at all affected by Detroit's bankruptcy) to private sector employees. And in Link #1, public sector employees in Michigan apparently make more, on average, than private sector employees.

How is "too much democracy" the problem here? If you made voting compulsory you wouldn't have this problem.

Is it a surprise that HC doesn't believe in democracy?

Democracy works fine, right up to the point that the people figure out that they can vote themselves stuff they don't have.

Why exactly do people still persist in the fallacy that government employees have "great benefits"? It gets strange how many people who work for big private companies act shocked when they realize their health plans are much better than mine... (though, yes, my health benefits are better than people's benefits who work for small private companies)

Imran is correct: I read an article this week about government workers benefits in Canada and they happen to be between small business and large corporations, i.e. nothing special.
