Nobody cares what a dummy like you thinks Ben. I love that I can write these comments and the retort is "This Message is hidden because Ben Kenobi is too stupid to interact with"

      Also, relevancy in 2013?
You seem to hold the South in contempt for the Civil War, so, yeah.

Republicans voted against the first African-American President in US history; I think this should be remembered for 500 years

Ben is a useless turd. He can't even vote in American elections. The only effect he has on the process is providing an excellent example of what is wrong with America.

Democrats also voted against Abraham Lincoln and opposed the Emancipation Proclamation. 100 years later they opposed the civil rights act.

And you're holding the litmus test for Republicans that they opposed a president who's ancestors owned slaves, and were never slaves themselves?

I thought you didn't like Lincoln and belittled the emancipation proclamation for not liberating enough slaves... or do you like him when it's convenient for you?

Isn't Ben supposed to have a history degree? And he doesn't seem to be aware of the dixiecrat revolution following the Civil Rights Act...

                oh lord... this is priceless

I thought you considered him the patron saint of America a paragon all that was right and good about America. I don't like Lincoln. I'm also not an American either. We emancipated slaves long before you did and we did so without fighting a war.

What does Lincoln mean to me when we had Wilberforce long before?

It would have been pretty awesome if the southern states hadn't seceded so as to prevent the possibility of peaceful emancipation. But, clearly, Republicans today must be evil tyrants if Lincoln was an evil tyrant 150 years ago.

I suggest examining how Wilberforce did it to learn how it should have been done. Lincoln was a disaster, and if you have to destroy half of what you were appointed to save, well, that doesn't say much about your governance.

If your suggestion is to abolish slavery through an act of Congress- like Britain's slavery abolition act- that would have failed since the southern states would have seceded long before such an act would have sufficient support to pass. Of course the British empire was, well, an empire and if their colonies didn't like having their slaves freed there was **** all they could do about it.

So the bill fails. Wilberforce tried it for 30 years before he was able to get a parliamentary majority sufficient to pass the act. Plus it was compensated emancipation. Had Lincoln compensated slave owners it would likely have passed the South.

If it hadn't been done by Wilberforce, the impetus would not have appeared in the United States for the same. In the end - it was peacefully passed - in 1964. All the Civil War accomplished was delaying true freedom for black people by 100 years.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 could have never succeeded if the southern states had been allowed to secede. Sorry but the United States is different from the British Empire.

I'm not sure that I agree with this, but it certainly lowered the standard of living for all in the South (with the obvious exception of the slaves living in deplorable conditions) for 100 years. Many parts of the South did not see the level of 1860 economic activity until nearly 1970. A devastating and totally avoidable war fought for one terrible reason and many good political ones.

If the South had successfully seceded then slavery probably would not have lasted more than another 20 years and the following hundred years of racial hatred and animosity might have never been. Who knows? The really sad thing is that so many who had no slaves suffered so horribly under the advance of brutal and vengeful soldiers. Sometimes it is easy to see why the U.S. is so hated by so many....
