  • The US government is not going to default. This happens every so often but when push comes to shove, congress will move heaven and earth to prevent a default.

    • This is similar in content if not tone to the arguments I've been using to argue to BK and others why the Cruz strategy was a cul de sac that was never going to lead anywhere and only served to throw the President a lifeline on this issue.
So far the Cruz strategy is working just fine. Obamacare has been exposed as worthless. For some of us, this isn't about posturing, it's about principles. Obamacare funds abortion and contraception. So long as it does - I'm going to oppose it every step of the way.

You're welcome to stand with us, or go join Pelosi, Reid, Obama, et al. Up to you. I'm with Cruz.

      • Of course you are. If all the idiots and crazies didn't line up neatly together, how would we know who to point and laugh at?

You really don't want conservatism destroyed. You think you do, but you don't. I really don't want liberalism destroyed. The ability of both philosophies to be brought to the debate is part of what has made this country successful. This is why you are naïve. You assume that your philosophy is the only correct path and thus proceed through your political life wearing blinders...unable to see what may lie outside your narrow scope of vision.

            • If being on the opposite side of a debate to Ben makes me an idiot, then I'm fairly happy with that.

Don't confuse me with saying something so overtly intelligent!!

Obamacare is still funded and the GOP is on the verge of being forced to give away the one victory they were able to achieve in deficit reduction during the Obama years. Obamacare has also seen a tic up in popularity (for the first time ever) as a result of Cruz's strategy. In what way has this episode proven to you that his strategy is working?
Obamacare has been exposed as worthless.
This was going to happen anyway. The only thing that has happened is that all of the oxygen is being sucked away from the stories detailing the embarrassing debacle the law is and all attention is focused on the shutdown.
For some of us, this isn't about posturing, it's about principles.
Meaningless poppycock. Principles are fine but without a strategy to move the ball of public debate in your direction you might as well stick your thumb up your arse for all the good you'd be doing.
                  Obamacare funds abortion and contraception.
Then why are you helping to save the law?

Unfortunately, modern "conservatism" has nothing to do with actual conservatism. When I say "conservatism", I'm talking specifically about the Tea Party's extremist policies. Because that's what modern conservatism is. It's an ideology more dangerous than Islamic fundamentalism. And while ideas can't be defeated, the people that believe in them can be so marginalized that they don't matter. That's what I want.

And no, I don't want a single version of liberal philosophies to dominate American politics. Liberals can be just as stupid. However, they aren't as dangerous. That's why I don't fit in with them. There are evil people and idiots in every group of people. It's just that the Tea Party is a group that has a very large amount of both idiots and evil people.

Okay...that makes more sense. When I speak of conservatives, I am definitely not talking Tea party...I am talking fiscal conservatives. "Modern" conservatism = Tea Party...gotcha.

I am glad to see some reason in this post and an acknowledgement that extreme liberalism has its dangers as well. If I was able to counsel liberals, it would be to not let the hatred of the far right drive them to the far left. That type of knee jerk reaction seems to be quite popular right now.

The phrase is meaningless. Define "good point".
