In 1980, 1984, and 1988 Republicans could actually win national elections. Not only are they not doing that now but they're becoming increasingly less likely to be able to.

Oh, I see a hell of a lot which is wrong with the Democratic Party (and complain about them here regularly) but being even slightly to blame for shutting down the government and threatening default? Nope, those are not one of them as this truly is 100% indisputably the fault of the Republican extremists. Please learn the difference between reasonable and unreasonable demands.

      • I love it when people act like the two parties are equally to blame for this (or any other) issue. Oh yeah! If only those mean Democrats would meet the Republicans halfway and compromise. "Compromise" to the Republicans is giving in to everything they want.

So yes... maybe Democrats are to blame... for not saying yes to the Republicans.

Unless your definition of "national elections" only includes the presidency, this statement is obviously incorrect. Even if it's limited to the presidency, it's still stupid since the GOP has only been out of the White House for 5 years, which isn't out of the ordinary.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

The House Republicans have already dialed back their terms significantly. The Dems could easily get a deal by delaying the individual mandate for a year, and Boehner would probably settle for much less. The problem right now is that the Dems are refusing to give Boehner anything.

That's right... and the Dems shouldn't give them anything. The Republicans had their chance to do the Obamacare fight. They lost. They had their chance in front of the Supreme Court. They lost.

It's an interesting tactic, shutting down the government to try and recoup past losses. But it failed. Move on already.

Or don't. More than 70% of people blame the Republicans. The Dems have nothing to lose.

It's the greatest failure in modern political history... aside from the Bush presidency.

When? Obamacare was passed without any Republican votes, and the GOP has never had a chance to alter it despite regaining the House in 2010 in large part due to the public's displeasure with the passage of the Affordable Care Act.

They have. Boehner didn't even want to tie Obamacare changes to the continuing resolution, and would likely settle for something (practically anything) else that would allow him to save face.

Yes. It's called the American political system. They lost. Move to Canada if you don't like it, bitch.

Fuck Boehner's face. This is his mess. Let him choke on it.

I'm definitely thinking about it. Not Canada, which is a ****ty country, but somewhere else with a sane political system and a reasonably bright future still ahead of it.

Yeah, he ****ed up. However, at this point, neither side is trying to win. They just want the other side to lose.

True, although I think Boehner and the non-Tea Party Republicans are just trying to survive.

                        • The Republican threat to default, not because of any good reason but just because tea baggers and to throw a hissy fit would be a catastrophe lus the credit ratings agencies are saying it would cause another Republican credit down grade for the country simply because they're worried about Republicans threats to not pay America's bills. Why haven't these criminals been removed from office yet? I mean this is the second time the tea baggers have done this.

Fight Over Debt Ceiling Risks Credit Rating, Moody’s Warns

WASHINGTON — Moody’s Investors Service warned on Thursday that it might downgrade the nation’s sterling credit rating if Congress does not increase the nation’s debt limit “in coming weeks,” putting a spur to sputtering talks between party leaders and the White House to reach agreement on a long-term deficit-reduction plan.

Moody’s unexpected report follows by six weeks a decision by another major ratings firm, Standard & Poor’s, to lower its outlook for the Aaa rating on United States debt – but not the rating itself -- to negative from stable.

That's true. Having tied their lot with the wacko-crazies they're now stuck in an untenable position. It's still entirely their own fault though.
