Originally posted by Captain ******* Kirk View PostI very glad that kentonio completely ignored the fact that the Republicans would've gotten their way on Obamacare in 2010 if the US used the British system of government. I guess it's hard to bash America when its ****ed-up political system is actually holding back the political party that you mindlessly hate.
Probably more importantly however, when people vote in the UK although technically they are not voting for a national leader or party at all, in practice a large majority of people are doing exactly that. If 2010 had been a national election under our system then perhaps the GOP would have swept into power (conveniently ignoring that Obama had only been in office a couple of years of course), but in that case the GOP would have been running the country and you wouldn't have this nonsensical and idiotic situation where a president gets elected twice and spends his whole time having the other party blocking everything he tries to do. Because elections are held every four years however, you don't tend to get the same kind of 'protest vote' that you saw in 2010 because people understand that they are electing a government not just part of one, and they will have to live with that choice for 4 years.
As for your little snip about how I mindlessly hate the Republicans that's actually pretty funny. Until midway through Clinton's term, I was much more a Republican supporter than a Democratic one. The sad thing is that for too many Americans who've lived so close to US politics, they just can't see how out of control, extremist and downright repulsive the modern GOP has become. They stand for nothing other than corporate wealth and power, they despise women, minorities, and foreigners, and their politics have gone so far past any kind of logic or reason that in many cases they simply make no sense at all. We're living in an age when the GOP sneer and laugh a man like Jon Huntsman out of the primaries while cheering on Michelle Bachmann and Rick (OMFG) Santorum.
The GOP needs to be ripped apart and taken back and rebuilt by the moderates. It was a proud party once, and America desperately needs two strong moderate parties for your system to work. Until that happens however I'm proud to openly hate the monster that it's become. Anyone who can stand up and proudly call themselves a member of the Republican party right now needs to seriously reexamine their morality.
Originally posted by Captain ******* Kirk View PostI'd love to hear you try to explain why the Republicans' behavior is so terrible in this case when they're doing exactly what any democratically elected lower house is expected to do. The Republicans are only failing to fulfill the mandate they were granted by the voters because the US system gives much greater veto power to an obstructionist upper house and independent executive than the superior Westminster system does.
As for the expectation of the lower house to be that they shutdown the running of the US government and threaten to default on the US debt unless their minority demands are met, that's just inane. Which should be pretty obvious to anyone who can read an opinion poll right now.

The memorials are a distraction from the real issues. Yes, we get this is your agenda, MrFun. And seriously, you couldn't have picked a more retarded example.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. Interesting to see the slow motion battle between the WWII vets and the government. The reason he doesn't need to shut down the WWI memorial is that they are all dead.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.
