My guess is we won't see a genuine change until we have distinctly ungendered persons, whether that be a result of genetic engineering or artificial intelligence. Then, once we're forced to use gender-neutral pronouns for some people, we'll come to use them for everybody in time. It's a shame, because there are plenty of languages out there that already have such pronouns.
