I'm having trouble imagining a California Condor digging up bullets in the ground to eat them.

I checked, currently lead ammunition is banned for hunting purposes throughout its range.

No-one gives a **** about lead bullets in the ground. The threat to the Condors from what I understand is that prey animals with lead in are still making it into its food system despite the existing local ban.

You're doing the same dumb thing gun rights people do when they claim that inner city gun bans don't work so banning guns doesn't work. If a ban is only localized, then you can't draw wider conclusions from it.

We as Americans value our freedom to have a choice to own a gun or to not own a gun.
The gun is not the issue, having our right to choose taken away is the issue of a gun ban.
We don't like having the gooberment or anybody for that matter telling us what to do.

That logic is actually correct, but moreover a California ban on lead ammunition would also be localized. In any case neither of those things is the point at hand.

The point is that you're talking about a ban on all lead ammunition for 35 million people because of the welfare of ~400 vultures. That is unbelievably ****ing retarded.

Currently the California Condor's conservation program is costing about $100,000 per bird. The cost of switching to bismuth ammunition would send that already absurd total through the roof.

The State of California also maintains that the lead ammunition ban has been effective at preventing lead contamination in the condor and also a number of other species. I question this, but whatever, saying that further lead restrictions are necessary and saying that the lead ban is working is having your cake and eating it.
