Chicago's actually 4th, 13th, 16th, and 25th if we are talking neighborhoods. If you want to talk about cities, you could look at the other list on that page, where Chicago is the 79th most dangerous place to live.

Well sure, it's no Detroit but no other city has 4 neighbourhoods in the top 25. And that's 79th when including 'cities' as low as 25k. Places like Camden are actually more dangerous than Chicago as a whole.

Chicago might have a lot of crime in certain very bad neighborhoods, but it still ain't got **** on East St. Louis.

Detroit is on the skids. East St. Louis is terrible. Flint, Michigan is pretty bad, for a smallish town. Michigan is beautiful country up north. Of course, you get rid of people and anyplace is better.

Those "odds of ..." are idiotic. Presumably based on population, which is why DET is so high; but lots of violent crime occurs to people who do _not_ live there (or, if they're doing it based on residence of victim, lots occurs when you're not at home). Roosevelt/Homan for example is not particularly dangerous - I drove down Roosevelt a few weeks ago, and I'd have been much more concerned to get out of my car a mile or two west. There may have been some gang issues there (that is in an area that I could easily see being between two gang territories). 77th/Ashland or Halsted I'll give you, that area is ****ed up. Indiana/60th is interesting, as it's adjacent to Hyde Park, where the University of Chicago is; but no student would walk west of Cottage Grove on 60th (as they're told by the University not to, as that's the boundaries of the University Police coverage). It is also not nearly as dangerous as other areas of Chicago, though, so I'm curious why it's on the list - perhaps low population again (right around there is pretty empty).

I used to live in the most dangerous town in Canada depending on how you measured the crime rate. It was a bit of an eyeopener... The city has been right up there at the top for a few years now.

Poor job prospects, hollowing out of industry, gang war, having the only prison for some 500 miles around, serious rise in the drug industry. Lots of factors make it bad.

No, not really. IL is solid blue, MI is slightly blue. Chicago had until very recently (so certainly in this timeframe) the most aggressive anti-gun legislation in the country, so it's not that.
