Actually, not so. The House of Trastamara through Ferdinand III, King of Castile, has priority. Through Joanna, the Senior Habsburgs from Philip I of Castile through his descendents ended with Charles II of Habsburg in Spain. The junior line through Frederick continues until 1740, and the War of the Austrian Succession.

Then the succession is transferred to the House of Lorraine. Karl II of Lorraine is the current claiment.

This is the same reason why Emperor Maximilian was Emperor of Mexico.

I suspected it wasn't the Bourbons, but it took awhile to prove. Empress Juana of Spain doesn't get nearly enough press. The Spanish Trastamara line ended with her - something I wasn't sure about.
