H Tower, I really don't believe anything a cop says without some sort of physical evidence to back it up. Did you see the video of the 4th of July DUI check point stop in Texas? The cops just get pissed off at a guy for insisting they obey the law and the constitution so they completely lie, fake a reaction from a drug dog (the handler verbally orders the dog to bark, it was caught on camera), and then ransack the guy's car all so they can "teach him a lesson". This is routine stuff out of cops; we see abuses like that over and over.

More than just 'smell marijuana' or find a blunt (unless that itself was sufficient for an arrest - in which case take them into custody and do whatever you normally do at the jail). That's a significant invasion of both privacy and body.

To be fair, particularly for people not familiar with police interactions it's a very difficult situation when police order you to do something, even if they're not really allowed to do so. Not only are (most of us) trained from birth to respect authority, but the policeman has all of the power in that interaction; it can be very difficult to remember all of your rights and to assert them. That's one of the reasons we have very, very lenient laws in terms of search and seizure; relatively minor mistakes can lead to the search being declared invalid and the evidence discarded.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

In a perfect world the answer to that would be no, but people are not perfect and you can better defend your rights if you actually know what they are and are willing to stand up for them. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. I didn't say they didn't. I just said if you know them, you can better defend yourself from those that want to abuse them. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple
