Never, ever give permission for a search. Pulled over for speeding? What more evidence of speeding do they hope to find?

I gave permission once and they took my fvcking car apart!
Never again! Next time they will have to get a warrant.

They won't get a warrant. I beat this in court. There are billboards in West Texas, saying don't let them do it.

I'm just going to say no and see where it goes from there.

Of course the cops know this and that's why they routinely lie and make **** up ("I smelled drugs") in order to search despite not having legal grounds.
The only thing you really accomplish by saying no is to increase suspicion and maybe come off as non-compliant. At best this puts you at odds with the intent of the officer but they remain calm and do their duty (the sort of cop who isn't going to misuse the right to search either) ... and at worst this pisses them off.

The crooked ones who are looking to misuse their authority are just going to find a reason to search anyways, so saying no gains you nothing.

In my case I remained courteous and friendly throughout, and it seemed to disarm the guy. Like he was asking just to get a rise out of me or something. I ended up with a warning for "driving too close to the lane line". Almost surely it was my out-of-state plates that was the real reason.

I like your analogy, but it's simply not true. There's no sensible explanation as to why saying no to a search of your car leads to a better result than saying yes. (Assuming of course that you don't have something to hide.) A good cop isn't going to misuse your allowance ... a bad cop isn't going to give a **** about your "no".

The mistake is in assuming that cops fall neatly into good and bad. They don't, there's a whole depressing spectrum from jaded, to disinterested to overly energetic to plain stupid. Never willingly submit to anything from the police unless you have a good lawyer and lots of time on your hands.

Completely irrelevant. Anyone who will do the terrible things you're pissing your pants about is obviously willing to disregard your wishes about whether they can search your vehicle or not.

Sorry but you sound naive. Incidentally I'm not 'pissing my pants' about anything, because I'm not stupid enough to give the police an open invite to do anything they like because I have 'nothing to hide'. Seriously how dumb do you have to be in the 21st century to trust the cops with this crap?

Even the ACLU says never consent to a search as all it can do is hurt you.

The cops just get pissed off at a guy for insisting they obey the law and the constitution so they completely lie, fake a reaction from a drug dog (the handler verbally orders the dog to bark, it was caught on camera), and then ransack the guy's car all so they can "teach him a lesson". This is routine stuff out of cops; we see abuses like that over and over.
Yes, I saw this and was appalled. Further evidence of the new police state we live in. Thanks Al Qaeda...I guess you win after all.

BTW...this wasn't in Texas if I remember correctly.
