I would put California higher up on the freedom side.

Something has to be said about a state when you can walk down the street in LA smoking a fat blunt and the only thing a cop will ask is to see your prescription and ask you to take it inside.

We really shouldn't let gun crazies define what states are free or not. I don't equate the imagined right to own military hardware to be indicative of freedom. Freedom from getting turned into hamburger by my neighbor is more appealing to me than the freedom for him to turn me into hamburger.

And WRT liberty vs security. Freedom is pointless if you are dead. So give me life... and freedom. And less quasi-fascist jingoist founding father (slave raper) fantasy bull****.
To us, it is the BEAST.

How is it that I'm the only one that voted for Florida?
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Okay? How many Americans can easily afford "military hardware"?

Oh! You mean "guns that are scary and black". Well I guess you should have just said that.

How often does that happen? You seem to be implying that thanks to the ease of access to Evil Black Rifles(tm) in some states, they are especially more dangerous than other states. California is isn't bad, but it isn't good eitherin terms of murder ratedespite having one of the most restrictive set of gun laws in the country, and Illinois is pretty bad too, at with a similarly restrictive set of laws(the gunlaws in Chicago being even worse than in the rest of the state).

Meanwhile Vermont has some of the least restrictive set of gun laws in the country, and their violent crime level is down near the bottom. Likewise Virginia has a substantially smaller murder rate with relatively lax gun laws than with states/jurisdictions that have stricter gun laws(DC, MD).

This isn't to imply that guns=greater security, it does, however, imply that gun laws in the US have no real effect on murder. This is because 10% of our population is responsible for 60% of the murders in the country, and instead of really doubling down on the causes of that (lack of social mobility, the war on drugs) my fellow liberals look for quick fixes that they know will be okay with soccer moms(scary black guns!).

And WRT liberty vs security. Freedom is pointless if you are dead. So give me life... and freedom. And less quasi-fascist jingoist founding father (slave raper) fantasy bull****.
You get shot at by guys who own rifles all the time?

There's around 20 million new semiautomatic rifles with "scary features" floating around in private hands since the AWB expired in 2004, not counting things like the Mini-14(which was used for the worst shooting in world history, and the worst shooting in Canadian history) and "featureless" black rifles...plus those made/imported before the Clinton AWB. Using your theory of military hardware=more deaths, there should be blood in the streets, which isn't true(gun deaths are at a record low, and most were commited with handguns and shotguns).

But at least in safe secure California, where the little people can't be trusted with dangerous weapons, I only have to be worried about getting killed in a execution-style shooting by the police or maybe get my car shot to pieces because it vaguely resembles that of a suspect. It's a good thing LEOs are exempted from California(and New York!) gun laws; they are obviously much more competant and trustworthy than some guy that goes to the range twice a month for fun.

Great; I'm a liberal and I'm right there with you, in wanting to deal with the root societal ills.

So when the fuck are conservatives going to wake up, and become interested in also dealing with the real issues, such as lack of socio-economic mobility?
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

First explain how the government is supposed to make socioeconomic mobility better and how conservatives are getting in the way. As for the war on drugs, conservatives support it because they are stupid.

With all the stuff you guys say conservatives support, it makes me want a different term for myself. I am conservative in many areas, but I'm not stupid or bigoted. In many social areas, I guess I would even be considered liberal by some. What would you call me? Hmmmm

Because Texas is on the list.

It's obvious that a lot of people voted for Texas just as it's obvious Ben can't read.
                  Perhaps MikeH shouldn't have cheated.

                  He himself admits:

There had been no votes made before I put the count in.
So that there is just one valid Texas vote. His own.

I'd like to see the mathematical explanation for why 4 of the 101 poorest towns in America are in California and 38 out of 101 are in Texas.
The question was, "why do you have to go 100 towns to get to eastern Kentucky".

Eastern KY has about 750k people. Out of 300 million people, you'd expect to see about 30x as many from CA + TX than you would from KY. You'd expect to have to go about 500 places assuming:

1, equal distribution of income across all populations. So the fact that Eastern KY is represented in the top 100 is significant. The fact that 38 are Texas demonstrates that the ratio is not out of line.
