Easier to just get a new provider. Verizon should never have given the government anything. Nothing really forced them to.

The page only dealt with MS's official policies and controls on the device (and I only meant to speak of that limited context); if they actually violate that on their own account, I'd think that would leave them vulnerable to some extremely ugly lawsuits. And there's no way in hell they could keep it secret. Now, you're right that the whole thing is ripe for abuse; they're effectively setting up a network of very advanced recording devices which they can access, at a minimum, once every twenty-four hours. More likely at any time, for most users, and I don't see any technical barrier to surreptitiously "updating" the things to be remotely activated and controlled.Originally posted by Koyaanisqatsi View Post
Now, I don't see any immediate, practical use for such a thing--though that doesn't mean such a use doesn't exist, of course. If a third party rigs an exploit, as Guy fears, there's not a whole lot they, as private citizens, could do with it. I guess they could play voyeur on people who keep their Xboxes in the bedroom? And perhaps it could be used for remote-casing a house before robbing it. Maybe I'm just not thinking creatively enough. Abuse by the government or other large actors sounds more technically promising--dunno how feasible it would be to sift through the data of every Kinect in the country for a particular face or object or sound.
In conclusion, I'm not sure when or how I became a mail carrier, but I'll take it on faith that Wiglaf is correct.

I'd like to bring back old style fair use laws and legally require those contracts to be changed. Why? Because changing them to remove fair use was bull**** to begin with and should be a criminal offense. Government needs to protect the rights of consumers against preditory corporations who tilt the field to their advantage. Yes, these rules do harm small businesses and help only a few giant corporations so once again make these arrangements illegal and the big corporations can either go bust or learn to adapt to a market where customers have rights. Tough ****, so sad, adapt or die, *****es but, no, you can't cheat people out of their fair use rights.Originally posted by Wiglaf View PostYou own only what you agree to own on a per-sale basis, and I just want to be clear about this, while I have gained 5 lbs this month because my dog Washington apparently killed my neighbor's infant and the threat of a lawsuit is kind of stressing me out, I am not ugly by any stretch of the imagination.
