Most national and state parks won't let you graze livestock without a grazing permit which is sold to only one person for an entire area for an entire year. Yes, I used a water pump to refill my water needs from streams but there were stretches (on steep inclines or what not) where streams were not available so you had to carry enough for at least a day or two. It would be nice to have food on the hoof but sadly that wasn't in the cards.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Yeah, it's about as light as I'm willing to go. I need a frame. It's a pseudo internal-framed pack made by ULA called the Catalyst. It's seen about 300miles on various trails in VA, WV, MD and PA.Originally posted by MichaeltheGreat View PostYour pack itself is fairly light.
Longest I've gone was 10 days from Rockfish Gap to Snickers Gap on the AT. I originally scheduled it only for SNP(about 10 miles a day) but I was making good enough time I went a bit further. AT(outside of Maine...) isn't quite like the backcountry you've gone through, though. Plenty of accessible water.Longest two trips I've done (not on government payroll
) have been 27 days in Utah backcountry up above Zion, and 20 days on Pacific Crest trail from Tahoe to Tuolumne Meadows, but that was pretty leasurely - I could have done it in 9 or 10, but wanted to sniff around a bit, since you get into some good remote back country that very few people visit.

The best thing about REI is the clueless cute chicksOriginally posted by regexcellent View PostIf a pack is more than 40 pounds I want nothing to do with it.
And you can totally go without a ton of **** that the folks who shop at REI pick up.

They don't have REI around here but when I was at a store in Virginia last summer (when I was working at the Fed) I found myself explaining to some...I guess 17-year-old girl why she didn't need a special shirt to go hiking. Of course, well, women, she bought the shirt anyway. Whatever, not my money. Oh, and she was trying to decide whether to get the shirt that would go well with her new pack color-wise or the shirt that would "enrage bears less" due to not being red.Originally posted by MichaeltheGreat View PostThe best thing about REI is the clueless cute chicks

Oh, and for some reason she and a bunch of other people thought I worked there.

I worked there when I was 18 and 19. Not only was it a great place to work for someone into the outdoors but it did indeed seem to be a magnet for cute outdoorsie chicks.Originally posted by MichaeltheGreat View PostThe best thing about REI is the clueless cute chicks
