                    Only a ******(or hooah/jarhead) would think that's fun.

                    30-40lbs on the outside.

                      I didn't say it was fun. I like to take a 4x5 field camera on back country trips, so for two weeks, pretty hard to get below 70lbs to start, assuming you've got good water supplies en route, otherwise, closer to 90 to be on the safe side. If I'm out in the desert, than I increase water and decrease the hell out of everything else, but still start at 85 or so for a two week trip.

                        Lesse(for 3 season camping):

                        Sleeping bag: 2lbs 7oz
                        Sleeping pad: 1lbs 12oz
                        Tent: 3lb 5oz
                        Backpack: 3lbs

                        I also bring my Nikon d5100 w/18mm-105mm zoom. APS-C is fine for me, I ain't Ansel Adams.

                        Everything else is water, food, dog food, cooking stuff(canister stove), etc. Pocket knife, map, compass. Flask of scotch. There's plenty of water sources in the Appalachians. It's possible to keep it below 30lbs.

                          If a pack is more than 40 pounds I want nothing to do with it.

                          And you can totally go without a ton of **** that the folks who shop at REI pick up.

                            The longest hiking trip I ever went on was three weeks and 211 miles plus it was in the mountains so there were lots and lots of elevations gains and loses which slowed things down considerably. You can easily get your gear down to just 15lbs even on a long backpacking trip but the hard part is food because you have to carry it all on your back unless you have caches along the way. Food and water adds a lot of weight fast.

                              Grab water from streams, use those disgusting iodine tablets. That saves a TON of weight.

                              One cool thing to do is bring goats with you. They can be super easy to herd along and they'll carry your stuff and just feast on the plants along the way. When I get my own place, hopefully I will be able to keep goats, because they're awesome.

                                Your pack itself is fairly light. My smaller one (36 liter Osprey) is about 3 lb, my larger is 4lb 14. I don't typically go places with lots of accessible water, so more than half the weight I pack in is water + about 1lb 12 oz for filter/purifier for what I do find.

                                Longest two trips I've done (not on government payroll ) have been 27 days in Utah backcountry up above Zion, and 20 days on Pacific Crest trail from Tahoe to Tuolumne Meadows, but that was pretty leasurely - I could have done it in 9 or 10, but wanted to sniff around a bit, since you get into some good remote back country that very few people visit.
