What Catholics insist is "veneration" but not "worship" is what much of the rest of the world sees as slightly different (if different at all) shades of the same thing.

Also the concept precedes the English language. So it seems pretty stupid to me to argue that we 'created the distinction' by the use of English words, that didn't even exist when this concept was formulated.

From memory, sitting around in cold draughty churches on a Sunday, having walked past rows of houses where the smell of roasting beef and boiled cabbage is leaking out into the damp air, nodding off during interminable sermons, being woken up by the bells ringing just in time for the cannibal hero-god feast- dry biscuits, at least the heretics get wine too- and then trudging wearily home after a buttock aching hour or so on hard wooden benches.
