I agree it's certainly not on the scale of rape or soliciting sexual favors, but to me, this is a lateral issue, not a completely a lesser one, because the comment was made in public at an official function. So it sends the "I'm beyond the rules" sort of message, embarasses the institution, and the girl (who self-identified as shy, so it's a bit daunting for her in the first place) has to figure out "WTF do I say/do now? with all this attention focused on her. From a one on one interaction perspective, it's certainly way less than assault or coercion of the fear of assault, but this is a public interaction, not private, so there's a separate element of "I'm above any rules and you're just one more piece of ass for my amusement." That's why I think these people should be squashed like bugs, regardless of party.

Lots of things shouldn't happen in high school, but honestly, what the **** are you gonna do about it? Try to get 17 year old boys to not be 17 year old boys? Let it be a life lesson in having thick skin.

Some people just don't have it. I never gave a **** what anyone thought or said, so I was immune to the whole fitting in thing, but the majority of people just aren't born that way, and if they get piled on as kids, it thins their skin, not thickens it.
