Meteorite falls in Russia's Chelyabinsk region; damage and casualties unclear

    Published February 15, 2013

    Associated Press

MOSCOW – Russian officials say a meteorite has fallen in the Chelyabinsk region some 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow.

A spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry, Vadim Kolesnikov, said the Friday morning fall caused a blast that broke windows.

There were no immediate confirmed reports of injuries, but Russian news agencies cited unnamed sources as saying several people were injured at a school in a thinly populated part of the region, which is on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains.

Coming from a citizen of a country where an important fraction of the population believes in creationism this is gorgeous.

BTW, isn't this another reason to stock up even more on guns, tex ?

?? Believing is not an issue here, is being afraid that is frowned upon.

If you believe in UFO's, then it seems perfectly reasonable to be scared stiff of them. If you weren't, then you're probably not thinking it all the way through.

Over 500 hurt. Windows shattered and even walls damaged. Maybe this could be what is needed to get people serious about space defense.

I never have understood why some people insist on denigrating someone else's beliefs. This thread had nothing to do with religion and yet you feel the need to do this. To me this is more revealing of your own religious intolerance than it is of anything else.

Belief in a UFO isn't the point. The point is believing a UFO is going to drop a big rock on you.

Now there's at least one idiot blaming the USA.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the nationalist leader noted for vehement statements, said "It's not meteors falling, it's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space.

"At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies" to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency.
                      BTW, **** you, dannubis.

I'm not sure we really can build a defense system capable of stopping small ones like the one from today, but hopefully it raises some eyebrows.
