    Gun checks outpoll Mother Teresa
    By: Kevin Robillard
    April 17, 2013 05:15 PM EDT

Universal background checks on gun purchases are more popular than Mother Teresa.

It’s been repeated ad nauseum by President Barack Obama, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and other backers of expanded checks that 90 percent of the American people support universal background checks. Despite that support, the Senate vote 54-46 to defeat a bill to expand background checks crafted by Manchin and Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) on Wednesday.

“How often do 90 percent of Americans agree on anything?” Obama asked during a White House event last month with victims of gun violence.

The answer, according to the nation’s pollsters: not very often. Not even on Mother Teresa.

Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm, has found 90 percent support for only two things during its 12 years of existence, according to pollster Tom Jensen: Abraham Lincoln and Jesus Christ. Lincoln was viewed favorably by 91 percent of Americans in a November 2011 poll, and Jesus by 90 percent. Mother Teresa only warranted 83 percent support.

The Pew Research Center, an older firm, has only found one policy area where 90 percent of Americans agreed. Back in 1992, nine-in-ten people believed in the general statement that there “needs to be stricter laws and regulations to protect the environment.” The center has also found 90 percent agreement on three other statements on the importance of voting, admiring the rich and keeping the country active in world affairs.

President George W. Bush’s approval rating hit 90 percent in the days immediately following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to Gallup. Gallup also has consistently found the percentage of Americans who believe in God to top 90 percent.

It’s worth noting support for background checks differs from pollster to pollster, but is consistently at least in the high 80 percent range. An ABC/Washington Post poll from the beginning of the month found support at 91 percent.

I think I'm going to go work for the NRA. That's where the real power is.

If they don't do that, they get voted out of office. Constituent pressure on this issue was one of the things that made Senator Wicker do virtually all State wide media outlets to defend his vote to even allow this debate to go ahead as scheduled.

Not everybody, but enough that it matters.

Because closing those loopholes would inconvenience law abiding citizens and wouldn't have done anything at all to prevent Newtown. Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be done.

              • Did I say it would have prevented Newtown? No, I did not. It is disingenuous for people to suggest otherwise. However, it is also just ****ing stupid to allow such a gaping loophole to exist; who gives a **** if people are inconvenienced. It is inconvenient for me to buy car insurance, or limit myself to 70 miles per hour.

                • The people of this country overwhelmingly want background checks. Over half the senate voted for it. Even the NRA used to vigorously support this idea. My guess is that much of its membership still does.

Even if the law is flawed and ultimately ineffectual, I would prefer to see the wishes of the (vast) majority followed. Representative democracy is not being served by the legislative branch. I guess we're supposed to pleased that some self-serving talking points made it into the Congressional Record. To me, not much comfort.

I'm against mandatory car insurance and speed limits. They have no place in a free society.

Could a privately owned road impose speed limits without depriving America of freedom? If so why can't public roads have speed limits that serve the interests of the public?

People do it all the time. Clinton said the reason the Dems lost Congress in 94 was because of the AWB, for instance.

But, you know, this is a issue for me. I will not vote for Connolly or Kaine as long as they back a AWB or Mag limits. I have otherwise voted for Warner and Webb.

And the reason why the UBC bill tanked today was because the Dems decided to make a go of adding in a AWB and Mag limits as amendments.

Seriously; this is frustrating as all hell. People are parading around dead kids and not targeting the problems. They are on pure emotion here. One of the people shouting "shame!" from the spectators galley was the mother of a Virginia Tech victim...and Cho had passed two such background checks.

                        • It was hillarycare, not the AWB...not that the AWB helped. Of course clinton would claim that it was gun control, since that isn't as much of a liberal holy grail.

Just alerting you, McAuliffe said he supports an AWB. He might backtrack, but I wouldn't trust him.

Too many Dem Reps directly attribute it as the cause. This book has a few chapters on the AWB/Mag Ban...and a lot of it is Dem reps whining that they constituents were shouting them down at rallies and/or telling them specifically "I don't need you or anyone else to tell me that I don't 'need' 17rds" while they were canvassing.

Makes sense. Health problems do kill more people than guns do.
