14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

I drank beer. I like beer. I still like beer. ... Do you like beer Senator?
- Justice Brett Kavanaugh
Why? What does that achieve? You think it's demeaning to want to fix something rather than just feel sad that it happened?
Is gun control the proper debate to have rather than one on involuntary commitment of the dangerously mentally ill?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
One aspect of the gun control debate in our country that is never spoken aloud is this:
NO ONE needs a gun for "self-defense."
If a person says they need a gun for self-defense, they are either A) a complete fool who is also a gigantic *****, a quintessential American specimen that is growing its share of population, or B) a ****ing liar, who only says they want it for self-defense but they really want it to make their dick hard at the thought of shooting another human being.
I have nothing but contempt for people who say they own a firearm for self-defense. Buy it for hunting, buy it because they look ****ing cool, whatever. But self-defense? Get the **** out of here. Owning a gun is one of the surest ways to increase your chance of violent death, not decrease it; moreover, violent crime has been on a steady decline for the past several years. Americans are dumb, and easily scared.
Another fact about gun control that no one has the balls to say out loud: Newtown was an unspeakable tragedy. But in the grand scheme of gun violence in this country, it was a fart in a stiff wind. If you want to stop massacres like Newtown, the surest way to accomplish that is to radically rebuild not gun control, but the entire mental health system of the country. Don't expect any overall improvement in gun violence, however. To do that, you'd need not only to radically rebuild gun control, but also radically change the very culture of the entire country. Which is never, ever, ever going to ****ing happen, which is why gun control is, while generally more benign than most government actions, every bit as useless as most everything the government does.

EDIT: I see DD got in a post re: mental illness while I was typing this. Good on him, he gets the point.
"My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine
"The subject of onanism is inexhaustable." --Sigmund Freud
The point is that effective gun control measures from your PoV are unlikely to ever happen in this country and such debates by gun control advocates only serve as a form of mental masturbation to make themselves feel better. The point is given that undeniable fact, why not start searching for real things to do that might actually solve the ****ing problem.

I like how Japan requires gun owners to affirmatively prove that they are mentally fit to own a gun and so must, at their own expense, go through a weeks long psychological fitness evaluation which supposedly can cost thousands of dollars. This must be redone every few years or else you will be charged with possessing a firearm without the proper permits which is a felony punishable by years in prison.
Don't Protestants and Catholics have the same New Testament? Except Protestants tend to stick to what's actually in the Bible instead of making up stuff about an "immaculate conception" and an "assumption of Mary".
Locking up people with homicidal psychoses is not something I would be against.
So what are you going to do? Assess everyone and shove people into two different boxes: one box for people a psychiatrist thinks is not going to kill people and a box that he thinks will kill people?
Do you even realise that all this went to the supreme court and it's illegal for you to detain someone that is not of imminent risk of injuring someone?
Perhaps you (as a society) should actually look at treating people first instead of deciding to lock people up. But no, that would cost money, and it's socialized healthcare...
In fact, the truly retarded thing is that you already detain people that are risk to society.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.
Looks like Joe Manchin is walking back his earlier pro-AWB statements due to wishing to remain senator of WV. Obama has been surprisingly quiet. I think the Democrats still have institutional memory from 1994. The Republicans have enough trouble with the base already, and tea partiers are just waiting in the wings to go for primary challenges which, if they vote for gun control, will succeed. And at the same time, Harry Reid controls what goes to the floor in the Senate and Nevada is very very pro-gun. Meanwhile Congress is out of session and the first order of business in January is the fiscal cliff issue.
If there's any new gun control it'll be pretty weak. Nothing sweeping.
