I should add something to what I posted earlier--West Virginia is very similar culturally to Southwestern Virginia as both are in the Appalachian Mountains. Eastern Virginia has a somewhat different culture and the farming communities in the Shenandoah Valley are also somewhat unique.

Historically Virginia has been where Southern culture originated and was most developed, and it's always been one of the more industrialized Southern states. This is why the Confederate capital was located there.

Also, most of the counties that today comprise West Virginia did not actually vote for secession. The second legislature that was set up were mostly far northern counties and the panhandle between Ohio and Pennsylvania was heavily over-represented.

Anyway, to suggest that the only reason Virginia is at all civilized is because of Washington banks on two false premises: #1, that places like West Virginia aren't civilized in their own right and that the culture of rural America is illegitimate, and #2, that there aren't culturally significant urban centers in other parts of the state.

If you count suicidal frontal attacks without preparation - although to be fair, he was pretty gone with laudanum at that point. Joe Johnston was putting up a hell of a delaying defense, which potentially could have cost Lincoln reelection, but ol' Jeff Davis never warmed up to Johnston. Hood gave the Lincoln campaign Atlanta on a platter.

Making shine is not a problem. It is a time-honored craft, and some of it is damn fine stuff. Making shine with tubing from old car radiators (with solder that contains mercury) is, however, another issue entirely.

Was it the Laudanum? Wasn't aware of that. He was a fine divisional commander, but doesn't seem like he had the personality for full command.
