If all you know about Ireland is that a majority of its inhabitants are Catholic then it is indeed a natural assumption.

Why do you keep bringing up the Troubles? They have nothing to do with this. Ireland is majority Catholic, so if you say "Archbishop of Ireland" without qualification, I assume you mean a Catholic. Why would I assume you were talking about the Archbishop of a minority faith?

I said NI is majority Anglican. Do you deny it?
        Absolutely.

Not only is Northern Ireland not majority Anglican, if you examine the 2001 UK census, the COI isn't even the first or second most common religion in Northern Ireland, let alone a majority.

Northern Ireland is 40% Catholic, 20% Presbyterian, and 15% Church of Ireland.

              I stand corrected.

Though I imagine most people think Archbishop and don't immediately equate it with Catholic. No one equated the two until the Catholics showed up in the thread. In fact -Jrabbit even pointed out that Catholics were on the forefront of anti-literalist thinking.

You shouldn't assume anything except that an archbishop in Ireland is some sort of Christian.

Well we know that Catholic Archbishops aren't dumb enough to believe in Young Earth Creationism. But lesser minds may be misled.

If you add the fact that Ireland was under centuries of English rule to your body of knowledge about Ireland then you can easily infer that Ireland has not just Catholic archbishops, but also Anglican archbishops.

Imran - the house of Orange was Presbyterian - hence the name Orangemen. The other thing you have to remember is that Ulster!= Northern Ireland. Only County Antrim and County Down are majority protestant. The other four are majority Catholic.

I know that Ireland has Anglican Archbishops, but they're not what I think of when I think of Irish Archbishops. Now, when I think of idiotic Irish Archbishops, who make up crap about Young Earth Creationism, then I assume that they're Anglican. So I guess you have a point.

I personally don't think people who lived in the 17th century and were young earth creationists were stupid. They really didn't have much of an alternative.

Except hardly anyone bothers seperating out protestant denominations, because it's pretty pointless. Just call it 40-35% and you'd have a clearer picture.

                                That's because you're a stupid American.

I don't actually know why, but archbishop over here is far more associated with Anglicans than with Catholics, while bishop is almost always associated with catholics. Strange but true..
