      • Ben's quality of life is probably something none of us would want to endure.

        • They would probably be happier if they only viewed those things as necessities though. Being able to be happy at $10k/year means you have the perspective to be happy at just about any income level. Compared to people who are unhappy with their finances at much higher levels of income, the personal benefit is obvious. (The societal benefit may not be, since people satisfied with their income don't necessarily push as hard to become more productive.)

          • I'm kind of surprised he couldn't get a higher paying job...doesn't he have a B.S. from some place in northern BC?

It seems to me he's in the kind of situation where he should be getting another job for off hours, in service like retail or a restaurant or something. Or maybe ask for a raise at the school he works at?

I have a BA in history. Up in Canada for me to teach I needed a two year degree - look up the Corren Agreement to figure out why I decided to move.

Which is what I'll do when I get my green card. Remember, work visa? I can't just go and apply and work for whomever here.

Does it make you feel better about your life when you try to take a dump on mine?

Like I said, I'm quite happy with my life here right now.

I have no debts, no divorce, no house with a 500k mortgage, no car payments. I haven't sold out my future. I'm not going to stay where I am, and I'm paying the price today for taking a big risk in relocating. I knew this meant some lean years now, and to be frank - the worst has already passed.

No, it does not have any effect on how I feel about my life. I'm commenting on your life much like I would comment on a 100 car pile up if I came across one. It's rather sad.

                          • Would be hilarious to find out that gribby is majoring in Criminal Justice or Art History.

                            • I don't have a "useless" major and even people with less valuable degrees can generally do better than $10-12k by a large margin.

                              • Obviously, since people without degrees at all can usually do better than that.
