The Confederacy had a real chance of winning, actually. A few more incompetent Yankee generals and perhaps Lincoln losing his re-election and they could have had it in the bag. Thankfully that didn't happen.

The south could have had no realistic expectation that the North would keep promoting such ****ing terrible generals. If the south had actually won it would have been purely down to the norths incompetence.

Northern incompetence as well as southern excellence. Robert E. Lee, although he was on the wrong side, was an excellent commander. No one (except Drake) questions that.

I think Robert E. Lee is overrated and only has a good reputation because a number of people have a raging hardon for the Confederacy.

He was pretty good, but the appallingly bad northern generals made most of the confederates look a lot better than they were.

Stonewall Jackson was pretty amazing. There's a book in the collection of RIT Army ROTC called "Stonewall in the Valley" which lists his exploits in the Shenandoah Valley campaign. I've been reading through it and he pulled off some crazy ****. The author seems to think that the North often had higher quality men, but that the South had way way better officers.

Jackson was top notch (usually) and Forrest was pretty special (the KKK racist *****). Struggling to think of many others who were really great though aside from just being good symbols like Stuart.

There was also a Confederate Colonel named John Mosby who as far as I know pretty much invented modern guerrilla tactics. After the war he served in prominent positions in the Grant administration.
